About Cate
I'm Cate Porterfield, a Canadian Certified Counsellor – Qualifying (CCC-Q) with a Master's degree in Counselling Psychology.
I believe that everyone deserves a space where they feel truly heard — without judgment, without pressure. My practice is built on the understanding that meaningful change begins when you feel safe enough to be honest about where you are and where you want to go.
I have a deep interest in supporting individuals who are navigating anxiety, adjusting to health challenges, or moving through significant life transitions. Whether you're feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or simply searching for direction, I'm here to walk alongside you.
Learn More About My ApproachWhat I Help With
Living with persistent worry or tension can make even daily tasks feel overwhelming. Together, we'll explore the root of your anxiety and develop practical strategies to help you feel grounded and in control.
A diagnosis, chronic illness, or health change can impact every part of your life. I offer compassionate support to help you process difficult emotions, adapt to new realities, and reclaim a sense of agency.
Whether it's a career shift, relationship change, relocation, or loss, transitions can feel disorienting. Counselling can help you navigate uncertainty with greater clarity and confidence.
When emotions feel too big to manage, it's hard to think clearly or move forward. I'll help you understand what's beneath the surface and build the emotional resilience you need to regain balance.
If you're questioning who you are or who you want to become, you're not alone. I provide a reflective space where you can reconnect with your values, strengths, and sense of purpose.
Burnout is more than exhaustion — it's a signal that something needs to change. Together, we'll identify the patterns draining your energy and build a path toward sustainable well-being.
My Approach
My counselling practice is rooted in the belief that you are the expert of your own life. My role is to offer guidance, ask the right questions, and help you uncover the insights and strengths you already carry.
I draw from evidence-based therapeutic approaches — including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and person-centred therapy — tailoring each session to what resonates most with you.
Every client is different, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach to healing. I prioritize creating a warm, non-judgmental space where you can explore your experiences at your own pace and in your own way.
You set the pace. I provide a space where vulnerability is met with compassion, not pressure.
Your experiences are unique, and your counselling should be too. Every session is shaped by your needs, goals, and comfort level.
I integrate proven therapeutic techniques — including CBT, ACT, and person-centred approaches — to support lasting, meaningful change.
Counselling is a partnership. I work with you, not on you — because the most powerful insights come from within.
FAQs
I offer virtual counselling to clients across Alberta and British Columbia. Limited in-person sessions are available in Grande Prairie, Alberta. Virtual sessions are conducted through a secure, confidential video platform — so you can access support from wherever you feel most comfortable.
My fee is $160 per 50-minute session. I believe in transparent pricing so there are no surprises. If cost is a concern, please reach out — I'm happy to discuss options.
Many extended health benefit plans cover counselling with a Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC). I recommend checking with your insurance provider to confirm your specific coverage. I can provide receipts for you to submit directly to your provider.
The first session is about getting to know each other. I'll take time to understand your concerns, what brought you to counselling, and what feels most important to you right now. There's no pressure to share more than you're comfortable with — we move at your pace. By the end, we'll collaboratively outline a direction for our work together.
You can book a free 15-minute consultation or your first session using the contact form below. I'll get back to you within 24 hours to confirm a time that works for you.
The number of sessions varies from person to person and depends on your goals and circumstances. Some clients find value in short-term focused work (6–10 sessions), while others benefit from ongoing support. We'll regularly check in on your progress and adjust as needed.
Absolutely. Confidentiality is the foundation of our therapeutic relationship. What you share in session stays between us, with very limited exceptions required by law (such as risk of harm to yourself or others). I'll explain these boundaries clearly during our first meeting.
